Introduce yourself to the Between Community
My name is Ginger Ellington. I’ve been a doula for 4 years. Before becoming a full time doula, I taught Pre-K3 at a local montessori school in Atlanta. I absolutely love children and feel very blessed to support families on their birth and postpartum journeys. I like to think I bring the same energy and enthusiasm I brought to the classroom to all of my interactions with moms, dads, and babies.
What inspired you to become a doula?
My best friend inspired me! She was expecting her first child four years ago. We grew up together, were there for each other through college, new jobs, marriages, all the big life changes, you know? So it only felt natural that I would support her in her journey to becoming a mom.
My teacher instinct kicked in as soon as my bestie said she was pregnant. I bought books, signed up for my doula training, and shared everything I was learning with her and her husband. I thought that taking the training would give me more information than a regular birth education class. And wow was I right. I gained so much knowledge and skills to support my friend and her husband as they welcomed their new baby. After the birth, I realized how much I enjoyed the work of being a doula. So I decided to continue with all of this, and here I am four years later.
What’s something you wish families knew about doula support?
2 big things: First, finding the right doula may take some trial and error. As a doula, it’s totally ok if you have a convo with me and decide we’re not the right fit for your birth/postpartum journey. My biggest hope for all parents is that they find the doula that’s right for them.
Second, your doula support may be covered by your insurance, which is an excellent benefit. I encourage parents to invesitgate if this is an option for them.
What’s been a highlight of your experience working as a doula?
This is like asking me to choose a favorite birth but all of them are so special. I think the moment I really look forward to with every birth is the first moment a mom holds her baby. It’s like all the light and joy of the universe is focused in that magical few seconds. Just thinking about it makes me tear up.
